Capalbio\u2019s historical city center has\nremained almost unchanged since the Aldobrandeschi\u2019s dominion in the eleventh\ncentury. That\u2019s why time seems to stand still when you walk in the narrow\nstreets climbing up to the Aldobrandeschi\nFortress<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing on the village\u2019s highest point, it consists of a square tower and an elegant palace made of local stone. The tower, erected by the Aldobrandi Family, makes the original core of a building that can be viewed from a distance of many kilometers. The square merlons are the same as Buranaccio Tower\u2019s inside WWF\u2019s Nature<\/a> Reserve<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fortress and its rooms are open to the\npublic and can be toured every day all summer long and on weekends in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things to see in\nCapalbio: the walls, Collacchioni Palace and the church of San Nicola<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Worth a visit are certainly the ancient city walls<\/strong>. The first city defensive\nwalls in the Middle-Ages were built by the Aldobrandeschi family between the\neleventh and twelfth century to defend the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 1400\u2019s, while Capalbio was under\nthe dominion of the Republic of Siena, walls were extended and strengthened.\nSuch interventions gave the village double surrounding walls and Porta Senese\n(the Sienese Gateway), situated on the northern side near the Fortress.\nFifteenth-century walls can be still admired today; recent restauration works\nbrought the monument back to its ancient splendor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You just cannot miss Collacchioni Palace.\nThis ancient palace, near the Aldobrandeschi Fortress, is hidden inside one the\nTowers in Via Collacchioni. Its three floors are finely painted with frescos\nand decorated in a Renaissance style. You will love the large stone fireplace\nand the jaw-dropping terrace overlooking the city and your children will\ntreasure them in their memories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another treasure is kept within the Palace:\nthe Conrad Graf fortepiano. It now rests silently in a corner of the\nfireplace\u2019s room but, apart from being an innovative piece of instrument for\nits times, it is said to have been played by Giacomo Puccini during his stays\nat a nearby Fortress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the town center of Capalbio, you can\nvisit the church of San Nicola. The church was built during the Romanesque period\nand furtherly extended and decorated until the fifteenth century. The church\u2019s\nportal is surmounted by a lancet arch bearing an inscription that testifies a\nrestauration work in 1466. This one-nave church has three small side chapels\nwith frescos painted by Umbrian painters and belonging to the Sienese school. The\ntwelfth-century bell tower is surmounted by a pyramid added in 1919.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside entertainment and music shows,\nCapalbio organizes food and wine events to promote local products that are\nreally successful. Until October, Maremma\u2019s cowboys (known as Butteri) perform\nat tournaments and competitions which finish with an end-of-season gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, nature plays a key role in the life of the community: at the WWF<\/a> Oasis, within Terre di Sacra\u2019s estate, you can take part to day and night guided tours led by ornithologists.
