Mini food & wine guide in Maremma: where you can eat well according to Terre di Sacra

Terre di Sacra, Capalbio Capalbio Restaurant, Cycle tourism in Maremma, Ecotourism in Tuscany, Excursions in Maremma, Family holiday in the country, Glamping

“Can you suggest me a restaurant?” Every day we are asked the same question at the reception at Terre di Sacra. That’s why we have decided to make a Mini Food & Wine Guide including the most interesting restaurants in our area. From Michelin-starred restaurants to a picnic on the beach, here are some ideas to make your vacation in Capalbio even more tasty.

We love good food so much that we decided to have Restaurant La Dogana, inside Tenuta Terre di Sacra, managed by the Enoteca La Torre Group, who already managed a Michelin-starred restaurant.

La Dogana is open at lunch and dinner offering a menu with seafood and local products. Since last year, you can also have lunch under your beach umbrella enjoying colorful lunch boxes, picnic boxes and poke bowls. At sunset, don’t miss the aperitif at the Doganino Lounge Bar sipping cocktails created by our mixologists.

Restaurants, locandas and trattorias

La Locanda di Ansedonia

La Locanda di Ansedonia is a grillhouse well-known in the whole Orbetello area. The place is simple and informal and it is managed by two brothers with a great passion for meat and the grill. Guests are welcomed by a butcher window display showing an incredible selection of local meats and dry-aged meat. You can also find Maremmana breed reared at Terre di Sacra: our cows graze freely in the area of Macchiatonda and their meat is certified organic. Locanda di Ansedonia is recommended for meat lovers and those who love ‘strong’ flavors. It is only a 10-minute drive from Terre di Sacra.

At Tullio’s in Capalbio

We like Restaurant Tullio in Capalbio because food is traditional and genuine and because the view from the terrace is wonderful. All dishes on the menu are seasonal and come from the Maremma’s tradition: pici cacio e pepe (local traditional pasta with pecorino cheese and pepper), gnocchi al ragù di cinghiale (gnocchi with wild boar ragu), fried porcini mushrooms and grilled meat. The wine cellar offers authentic local wines and it is possible to order wine by the glass choosing from the selection of the day. The beautiful terrace stretching over the countryside makes Tullio’s dishes even more delicious.

Trattoria La Selva

If you love seafood, we suggest that you book a table at Trattoria la Selva. This trattoria opened in 2004 and it is our favorite because of the menu offering local seafood and Italian traditional recipes. The fried fish at La Selva is a well-known dish in Capalbio and so it is the Risotto Alla Pescatora and the fresh catch-of-the-day seafood dishes which are cooked by the chef in different ways every time. This trattoria is also recommended for vegans and vegetarians who can find interesting alternatives to seafood dishes. Only 5 minutes by car from Terre di Sacra.

Ice-creams, aperitifs and cocktails

In this Mini Food & Wine Guide in Maremma we cannot forget ice-cream shops. We suggest that you try Gelateria il Gusto, an ice-cream shop only 3 kilometers away from Terre di Sacra. The shop has hundreds of positive reviews on Tripadvisor and a lot of frequent customers among residents and non-residents. Fruit ice-cream flavors change in accordance with the season while classical flavors are always available. A best seller is ‘dark chocolate’ which is also foreign customers’ favorite. A huge parking lot is available in front of the ice-cream shop and the staff speaks English.

If you want to order a cake during your stay at Terre di Sacra, we suggest that you go to Antica Pasticceria Ferrini in Orbetello. The bakery has been making traditional and local cakes and desserts since 1920, such as almond Cantuccini and the famous Tette di Monaca (Nun’s Tits). Widely famous are also the Millefoglie cake and their Apple Pie. They have recently introduced sweet wines to their offer, to accompany their desserts and biscuits.

Nearby Capalbio, you can visit the ancient Frantoio . This cultural space, pervaded by a fascinating and captivating atmosphere, was founded by Philippe Daverio. You can have an aperitif here and enjoy a meal in the beautiful garden or indoor at the bookshop. Every week, you can taste ten wines by the glass: ten local wine labels that change in accordance with the season and that amaze customers. A selection of local cheese and cold cuts, traditional dishes and a completely vegan menu complement the unique experience of such an amazing location and atmosphere.

A space place is deserved by the Doganino Lounge bar which livens up with the fabulous drinks created by the mixologists inspired by the sea, the Mediterranean maquis and the magic of the moment. Both the Restaurant La Dogana di Capalbio and the Doganino can be reserved for private dinners and parties.

Gourmet restaurants, an unforgettable experience

At just 50 minutes away from Terre di Sacra there is a restaurant that has been achieving two Michelin stars for 22 years: Caino Montemerano. Chef Valeria Piccini, a DOC born-in-Maremma, presents traditional dishes with love and talent. The restaurant, with only 9 tables indoor, is a dream come true for food lovers. A journey through ancient Southern Tuscan flavors and a wine cellar that stands out for its local and international wine selection.
